I had already done work for a publication on the Atlanta Olympics-drawings of runners, dance and drawn in dance and leisure centres, when newspaper photos of footballers caught my attention.

The way they flew through the air and achieved seemingly impossible positions, as well as the abstract sense of conflict and balance fascinated me.

On a more general plane, I have always seen people in a positive light, for all their faults, and my work has
sought to emphasise human achievement.

I am also interested in how we articulate against each other, how footballers bang and crash against each other. The football embrace fascinated me as an articulation of arms, legs, and elbows against each other in a culture where we are told we are all isolated individuals, leading our separate lives, and I began to wonder if this is true?
